Subject: Water damage to wood floors
I am consulting with the architect on the Thomas Wolfe Memorial restoration in Asheville, NC. From my earlier posting, you will recall that the circa 1883 house was heavily damaged by fire on July 24. The areas of the house which were not consumed by fire were, of course, soaked with water. We are currently assessing the extent of the damage and need some opinions to support our ongoing research. I am requesting information from anyone on the Conservation List who has had any experience with the restoration of water damaged flooring, i.e., cupping, buckling. The flooring in the 1883 section is pine throughout, averaging 6" in width, 1" thick. The surface has been painted for many years. There is no subflooring, although several rooms were floored over with 4" wide boards--these rooms have buckled up severely. Our restoration team would greatly appreciate any advice, references, and/or anecdotes that will help in our decision making. Check out the Thomas Wolfe Memorial home page at <URL:http://home.att.net/~WolfeMemorial/> for additional info. Fire damage photos will be posted soon.
