Subject: Call for papers--photographic materials
The Photographic Materials Conservation Group in the UK will hold a two day conference entitled: The Preservation and Conservation of Photographic Albums and Photographically Illustrated Books. Birmingham Central Library, Birmingham UK. 22nd -23rd July 1999 There is a long established tradition for the use of bound volumes such as journals, diaries, albums and scrap books for the preservation containment and presentation of paper based artefacts. Man's penchant for hoarding mementoes of his life probably goes back to the Garden of Eden and our archives and libraries proliferate with examples of this basic instinct. From the birth of photography to the present day, the containment and preservation of photographs, in such a physical environment, a bound volume, is firmly rooted in this tradition. The main aim of this conference is to bring together heritage professionals to explore current knowledge of and the skills, methods and techniques required for the preservation and conservation of this diverse material in order to address issues faced by those with the responsibility for its care. Areas covered will include recent work studies, storage, contemporary albums, advantages and disadvantages of albums as a storage method, historic album structures and materials and other related subjects. Call for papers or posters: Conference papers are invited on all aspects appertaining to The Preservation and Conservation of Photograph Albums and Photographically Illustrated Printed Books. A poster session is planned to accompany the sessions. Conference Abstracts of 250 to 400 words and a short Biography must be submitted by the 20th of February 1998. "The photographic holdings of the Birmingham Central Library and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery are without doubt one of Birmingham's best kept secrets. Birmingham has a long history of involvement in photography it was Thomas Sutton, editor of Photographic Notes (15th October 1857) who suggested that Birmingham was ' ...precisely one of those places where photography ought to be assiduously cultivated ....' and it was".
