Subject: Position at Public Record Office, Kew
Digital Imaging Technician Temporary Post Applications are invited for a temporary post of digital imaging technician to undertake a six-month pilot project, based in the Conservation Department of the Public Record Office at Kew, Surrey, United Kingdom, to create and store images of about 4,000 catalogued seals in the Public Record Office. The project is funded by the Pilgrim Trust and the Marc Fitch Fund, under the auspices of the British Records Association, and supported by the Public Record Office. Essential qualifications and experience: You must be capable of consistently careful handling and sympathetic treatment of fragile original wax seals, mainly attached to deeds, and of ensuring that neither they nor their parent documents are damaged during the photographic process. Previous experience in the handling of original documents would be an advantage, and training in document handling will be given. The second main requirement is the ability to keep an accurate and careful record of the work undertaken, using a specially-written Access Database. Desirable additional qualifications and experience: Experience in the operation of a Kontron or other digital camera, with associated lighting, would be a great advantage. Experience in the enhancement of images using Adobe Photoshop, or the writing of images to storage on CD ROM, would be significant additional advantages. Training will be given, with especial emphasis on any aspects of the work with which you have less experience. Some familiarity with Access databases and the study of seals would also be useful. Pay and conditions: A salary of UKP8,500 gross, for six months' work, payable monthly. for a five-day week, from Monday to Friday, under contract to the British Records Association. You will be entitled to eleven days paid leave, in addition to the usual public holidays which fall during the period of the project. Hours of work will be flexible, but within the time-bands worked by the permanent staff of the Public Record Office Conservation Department.
