Subject: Deacidification of 19th-century book illustrations
The Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB, National Library of the Netherlands) wants to extend its mass deacidification program to nineteenth-century children's books. As these books generally contain various kinds of polychrome illustrations, the question has been raised if deacidification treatment may have undesirable long term effects on this material. With respect to the specific deacidification process used by the KB, i.e. the Bookkeeper system, we should like to know if other institutions already have experience with the treatment of this kind of illustrated publications, and whether any studies are being done to test the risks involved.
