Fulbright Commission-Antorchas Foundation Grants

Purpose: Teach theoretical and practical courses on preventive
conservation and conservation treatments of the subjects listed
below; supervise up to 20 trainees.

Visiting instructors should have a good knowledge of their
respective conservation fields, possess teaching skills and
experience in working with trainees or interns, as supervisors and
evaluators. They should be asked to present an outline of the course
they want to teach, as well as a list of their needs for the course
(tools, equipment, materials and bibliography). According to their
expertise they can apply to teach one or more of the subjects
listed. They would discuss contents and formats of the programs with
a local coordinator. They will also report with the coordinator for
all practical purposes: planning, organization, support, travel,
living in Buenos Aires, etc. Each instructor would be required to
make a formal appraisal and grade students taking his/her course and
submit a final report explaining the result of the work and making
recommendations. They should have basic Spanish knowledge, a
translator will be available during the seminars. Classes will be
dictated in the conservation facility TAREA which is very well
equipped.

Professionals needed to dictate the next subjects:

Preservation administration for institutions holding bibliographic
and archival collections. Collections assessment and evaluation,
data gathering and interpretation, decision making and, preservation
policies and planning, budget planning.

Books and archival materials reformatting processes; decision
making, determination of priorities for microfilming, digitization
and conservation photocopying. Storage, organization and
administration of reformatted materials.

Photographic conservation; process identification, deterioration,
documentation, collections assessment and evaluation, monitoring
deterioration in photographic collections. Planning strategies for
photographic holdings. Preventive conservation basic care,  housing,
storage, holdings maintenance access to materials. Reformatting of
photographic collections.

Preservation and access of bibliographic and archival collections.
Relationship between conservation and collections physical
organization. Conservation steps that are involved during the whole
process of collections management and access.

Training in preventive conservation and basic conservation
treatments and housing of documents, maps and architectural drawings
(original and copies) from the XVI th century up to contemporary
materials such as faxes, photocopied materials. Documentation,
cleaning, humidification and flattening, tape removal, use of the
suction table, treatment of tears and losses. Knowledge of
identification, deterioration and problems of inks and media present
in archival collections. Monitoring deterioration in archival
collections.

Participants attending the above group of courses will have already
been introduced to the type of materials that are included in the
courses. they will already have knowledge of the materials and
structure of this types of collections almost all the participants
will belong to institutions that hold bibliographic and archival
collections.

Furniture conservation; preventive conservation, evaluation and
documentation, treatments for an array of furniture collections of
different styles and composite materials, analysis, identification
of materials and superficial treatment of the piece, cleaning
methods, reinforcement, assembly and discussion of criteria for
parts reposition. Upholstery conservation. Training in different
sites and museums as well as in a very well equipped conservation
laboratory. 2 to 4 months.

Conservation and exhibition; the role of the conservator during the
planning and the production of an exhibition. Preventive
conservation, lighting, environment, micro environments, supports
and  materials used for exhibition of various types of museum
objects. Training in different sites and museums as well as in a
very well equipped conservation laboratory. 2 to 4 months

Paintings conservation; documentation, tests and analysis of
paintings materials and materials involved in their conservation,
ethical considerations, new techniques for structural support of
canvas and wooden paintings supports. Use of the suction table,
cleaning techniques and color integration. Specialization in old
masters conservation treatments or specialization in contemporary
art. up to 2 months.
