Earlier I used Synperonic N for washing the paper. Later I replaced
it with Texapon Z (Sodium Laurul Sulfate), which is the same as you
find in tooth paste. I use 1 gram of this soap to 1 liter warm
water. After 10-30 minutes, I rinse the paper in cold water. In 1992
in Hungary Margaret Hey told me that soap or detergents should not
be used in paper conservation because they lubricate the fibres, and
therefore weaken the paper. Instead she recommended to soak the
paper in 50% alcohol and then wash the paper in water. Now I only
use Texapon Z when the paper are very dirty, and find that it is
better than a bleaching agent. Perhaps Texapon Z can be useful for
textile conservators?
