Courses at the Centro del Bel Libro Ascona Switzerland Summer and Fall, 2000 Iron-gall ink and paper 5-day course Julie Biggs, Paper Conservator, Washington DC Jul 31 - Aug 4, 2000 Fee: CHF 950. Languages: English/Italian Book and paper conservators treat iron-gall ink materials in many different ways, so when might a particular treatment option be more appropriate than others and why? The aim of the course is to familiarize students with a range of conservation strategies that they can use to preserve iron-gall ink-inscribed paper artifacts. Classes will cover theoretical elements - the history, chemistry, and deterioration of iron-gall ink; and practical methods - media identification, testing ink stability, fixing and consolidating, wet treatments, drying methods, and repair techniques for ink-corroded paper. Case studies will be used in slide presentations, for demonstrations, and during hands-on sessions. To conclude, group discussions will focus on evaluating treatments and will address practical and ethical issues encountered in the decision-making process. Participants should read from a bibliography of relevant publications prior to taking the course and are encouraged to bring their own iron-gall ink artifacts to work on. Historical chain and long-stitch sewing structures 5-day course Frank Mowery, Book and Paper Conservator, Folger Shakespeare Library Aug 7-11, 2000 Fee: CHF 950. Languages: German/English During the "15th and 16th century" a style of binding developed and appeared in "university" towns on manuscripts, ledgers and occasional small printed volumes. This binding structure used visible sewing stations, unlike the developed, traditional bookbinding techniques. This course will introduce the students to various techniques of sewing, chain-stitch, long-stitch and combination sewing. 8-12 models will be completed. In addition to the basic course, decorative weaving between the long-stitch sewing will be demonstrated. There will also be demonstrations of the adaption of the historical structure into modern conservation structures. Conservation of globes 5 -day course Patricia Engel, Paper conservator in Berlin September 11-15, 2000 Fee: CHF 950. Languages: German/English The conservator has to deal with a wide variety of materials when working on globes, like the paper, the media on which the image is created, wood, plaster, metal and varnish. The typical damage that occurs on globes will be discussed using numerous slides. Treatment proposals and actual treatments will be discussed. The course will be designed depending on the objects brought to the course so that all the participants can benefit as much as possible and practice a wide range of techniques.
