Jonathan Thornton will again be offering a workshop on the
technology and conservation of picture frames. The four day workshop
has been given in the past at both Oberlin and Buffalo, and has
always been completely subscribed. This is an advanced level
workshop that is intended for experienced framemakers, restorers and
conservators. Some experience with traditional gilding is desirable
as this will not be extensively taught during the workshop.

The pre-20th century techniques of picture frame makers, and both
the traditional and non-traditional methods of frame
restoration/conservation will be presented through slide lectures,
demonstrations and practical workshop sessions in the modern and
well-equipped studios of the Buffalo State College Art Conservation
Department.

toolmaking, the use of hand planes, scratch-stocks, and a
reproduction 17th Century style ripple molding machine, mitering and
joinery, composition ornament making, mold making, surface
decoration, gilding and surface coloring.

fill materials, traditional and non-traditional filling, inpainting
and ingilding methods, sprayed gesso and bole, gilding and coloring

at the Buffalo State College Art Conservation Department. He has
been trained in traditional techniques, and has also developed many
non-traditional methods which he has published in a number of
articles. He recently returned from a fellowship at the American
Academy in Rome where he was studying traditional methods and
materials of molding and casting from antiquity onwards.

Fees: The workshop will cost $350.00 for four days and includes all
materials. The fee does not include transportation. Meals and
accommodation are also not included, but are relatively in-expensive
in Buffalo.

An application form is available from the Department. Enrollment is
limited to twelve participants. Applications must be accompanied by
a $50 deposit. Payment of the balance is due by July 1st.
