Assistant Conservator, Conservation Unit Archives and Special Collections Durham University Library UKP13,317-UKP15,899 per annum (under review) The Archives and Special Collections department of Durham University Library is attractively situated in the Library's Palace Green Section close to Durham Cathedral and the historic city centre, and within easy travelling distance of Newcastle upon Tyne. It administers exceptionally rich and varied collections, medieval to modern, including manuscripts, archives, books, maps, prints and photographs. To share in the wide variety of work carried out by the Conservation Unit, including conservation and repair of paper, parchment, maps, architectural drawings, seals, etc., binding, preventive rehousing, and photography. During the period of the post it will include a special project, funded by the Research Support Libraries Programme (RSLP), to repair and conserve an important series of 15th to 17th century records. The post is a fixed-term appointment for two years from 1st August 2000.It offers opportunities both for experienced conservators and for newly qualified conservators wishing to extend their range of skills (applications are welcome from students who will qualify this year).
