Subject: Course in art and object handling
Art and object handling West Dean College September 17-22, 2000 West Dean College, as part of its professionals in practice series for 2000, is offering a course in art and object handling. Designed to explore and review routine methods used in art and museum object handling, this course is aimed at those already working in the field at mid-career level. Participants may be a senior people in an art handling team, independent consultants, or house managers, where art and object handling forms only part of their remit. The course, which has been designed in collaboration with The Association of Art and Object Handlers, is led by Bruce McAllister, formerly Gallery Manager of the Whitechapel Art Gallery and Head of Art Handling at The Tate Gallery, and Mani Bermejo, current Head of the Art Handling Team at The National Portrait Gallery. Highlights of the course include a study day at, and sponsored by, The Tate Gallery; a training day on transport, packing and handling co-presented by Momart Ltd, a company that coordinates the international movement of works of art for exhibitions of all kinds; and a tour of West Dean House, highlighting problems of art handling within an historic house, conducted by the College's own conservation experts. Speakers will include Ian Dejardin, Curator of the Dulwich Picture Gallery; Freda Matassa, Head of Collections Management at The Tate Gallery; Trish Goddard, Head of Art Handling at The National Gallery; Margaret Reeves, National Trust; and Kathleen Soriano, Head of Exhibitions and Collections Management at The National Portrait Gallery.
