Head, Reformat and Replacement Services Preservation Division University of Michigan Library Duties: The Head, Reformatting and Replacement Services (RRS) in the University of Michigan Library's Preservation Division is responsible for the management of the Reformatting and Replacement Services units, including all fiscal, administrative, and operational activities. S/he manages the brittle books replacement and format conversion (primarily microfilming and digital imaging) programs, as well as the format conversion of material on a project or contractual basis. S/he is a member of the Preservation Division Management Team. Her/his contacts include staff at all levels throughout the Library and the University, colleagues in the national and international preservation communities, commercial vendors of format conversion services, and representatives of funding agencies. As part of staff management responsibilities, the Head, RRS oversees staff development and professional growth; maintains an environment in RRS that encourages and rewards innovative thinking, teamwork, and results-oriented entrepreneurship; and maintains an environment that welcomes, promotes comfort with, and celebrates diversity of staff backgrounds and beliefs. Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent relevant advanced degree. 3 or more years experience working in a library preservation program, with particular emphasis in the area of reformatting and replacement. Successful supervisory and project management experience. Knowledge of issues related to established (e.g., microfilm) and emerging (e.g., digital imaging) format conversion technologies and their applications in library preservation programs. Excellent understanding of interplay of preservation and access relative to format. Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative, independent judgment, and follow-through, and to meet (sometimes tight) deadlines. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work successfully as a member and as a leader of a team comprised of staff at all levels. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff in a culturally diverse environment. Desired: 3 or more years experience working in a large, academic research library. Experience with digital conversion technologies in a project or program environment. Successful experience in writing grant proposals. Knowledge of collection management issues. Familiarity with collection description, cataloging, and metadata theory and practice. Bibliographic knowledge of one or more European or Asian languages. Rank: Rank is anticipated at either Associate or Sr. Associate Librarian depending on experience and qualifications. Salary, and leave: Final rank and salary dependent on qualifications and experience. (Minimum salary at Associate is $35,500; at Sr. Associate, $41,000). Professional positions receive 24 working days of vacation a year; 15 days of sick leave a year with provisions for extended benefits.
