Subject: Call for papers--Couriers
Call for papers Institute of Paper Conservation conference: "Part and Parcel of the Job" Organisers: Heather Norville-Day, Angela Thompson, Shulla Jaques Brunei Gallery, London, England Proposed date: Spring 2002 Going behind the scenes of major museums and galleries to discover the extent of departments' involvement in the loan programme is the focus of this conference. Planning, preparation, packing and transit of works of art selected for a loan is a complex procedure. A process, which may initially seem swanlike, calm and collected, in reality is a co-ordinated machine paddling like fury to reach its goals and objectives. The conference will explore the role of conservator, illustrated with case studies of conservation treatment programmes, together with mounting and framing requirements as part of the loan activity. Papers are invited from curators, technicians, registrars, agents, and conservators based on technical information, procedures and personal involvement to cover the preparation, transit and installation of displays. An overview of the appropriate types of glazing, packaging material, and case construction, currently identified as escapable, will be presented. Finally looking at the responsibilities of the courier, conservation condition reports and the current training offered. The function of the conservator courier is not only part and parcel of the job, but an ambassador and custodian of a collection, here we hope to provide clear examples and guidelines to the current procedure.
