Subject: Call for papers--History of conservation and conservation in 21st century
Call for papers Past Practice - Future Prospects An international conference on the history of conservation of the portable heritage with a look into the future of conservation The Department of Conservation of the British Museum is planning an international conference to be held between 12th and 14th September 2001 in the Education Centre in the Great Court of the Museum. Abstracts are solicited on two themes--the history of the conservation of the portable heritage before about 1960 (excluding buildings but including wall paintings and mosaics) and conservation in the 21st century. Papers on the history of conservation should consist of: * studies on important "conservators" or "restorers" from the past with an evaluation of their contribution to the subject, * histories of conservation in a geographical region or country, * histories of conservation of particular techniques (with an emphasis on the obsolete methods) * histories of conservation in important institutions. Although historical accounts are requested, critical appraisal as seen from the end of the 20th century is relevant. The cut-off date of 1960 is not absolute; studies of individuals may well need to end more recently. Papers on conservation in the 21st century may address any topics of current/future "political" or "philosophical" interest (but not conservation methodology or case histories). Appropriate topics are: * accreditation * collections care * working practices * the definition of a conservator/restorer or conservation scientist * the future role of conservators and the conservation profession Advice on the suitability of a topic in advance of sending an abstract may be had by e-mailing Abstracts should reach Maureen Theobald Head of Administration Department of Conservation The British Museum London WC1B 3DG by 31st August 2000. Successful authors will be notified by 30th September 2000. Completed texts with all illustrations must be received by 31st January 2001. Please note that submission of an abstract is taken as an acceptance of this timetable. *** Conservation DistList Instance 14:1 Distributed: Monday, June 19, 2000 Message Id: cdl-14-1-016 ***Received on Tuesday, 13 June, 2000
