Subject: Course on care of carriages
Care and Conservation of Carriages November 28-30, 2000 Issues and approaches in the care and conservation of carriages is the latest course to be announced in the 'professionals in practice' programme at West Dean College. Aimed at specialists and practitioners, who are concerned with the care, interpretation and preservation of horse-drawn carriages, the course is led by Chris Nicholson, the advisor on carriages to the National Trust, and Stephen Conway, a freelance carriage conservator. The event commences with a one-day conference, designed in collaboration with the National Trust, at the Royal Mews in London, including a tour the Royal Collection. This is followed by two days at West Dean College where participants will have the opportunity to examine and discuss treatment issues for the Duke of Norfolk's State Chariot, a 19th Century brougham and a four-wheeled dog cart. In addition to the course leaders, other acknowledged experts including practising conservators, carriage historians and curators, will contribute to the teaching.
