Conservation Technician Collections Conservation Unit Preservation Office Available: Immediately Introduction: The Princeton University Library's general collections include about 6 million printed volumes, as well as significant numbers of microforms, scores and records, electronic databases and journals. The annual budget for the Library exceeds $30 million. The Library employs approximately 320 professional and support staff workers, as well as a large student and hourly workforce. Library operations are divided among twenty sites on campus, including a large central library. More information may be found at <URL:http://libweb.princeton.edu:2003/> Description and Requirements: This position is responsible for preserving the materials in the Princeton University Library by providing conservation treatment for items that have fallen into disrepair. Primary tasks include: executing case bindings, adhesive bindings, pamphlet bindings, and split-board bindings; inlaying original covers; resewing textblocks; repairing spines; mending paper; and tightening joints. Requirements: ability to follow instructions exactly and to demonstrate good organizational skills; manual dexterity and excellent hand to eye coordination; ability to safely handle fragile and damaged books, and work with care, deliberation and speed; work with materials which are dirty, dusty, moldy, folded, and torn using proper precautions and health and safety equipment; ability to work independently and coordinate workflow; have working knowledge of computers; ability to work in a group environment; ability to learn and use library classification system; have minimum of one year prior experience in bookbinding, book repair, and/or conservation. Preference will be given to individuals who are familiar with the concepts of library preservation, have experience handling weak and or brittle library materials, and are familiar with tools and equipment used in the preservation of library materials.
