Subject: van Dyck
A six year research project into the technique of Sir Anthony van Dyck is currently being carried out within the Paintings Conservation Department of the National Gallery of Art. The project is nearing one-third of the way through and is being carried out by Katherine (Kiffy) Stainer-Hutchins. As well as cleaning and restoring a number of works by Van Dyck from the Gallery's collection, the work is focusing on the artist's technique as it relates to the Gallery's own holdings. These total 18, and are notably well represented in his Genoese period. I am particularly interested in collating related material and/or liaising with other conservators who have or are planning to work on a Van Dyck, or who have technical files from past work on Van Dycks in their care. Of special interest is X-radiography and the compilation of a digital image data base. If there is anyone who has any information or material they are willing to share, or indeed any queries, would they please contact me Kiffy Stainer-Hutchins Senior Research Fellow Paintings Conservation The National Gallery of Art 6th & Constitution Avenue Washington DC 20565 *** Conservation DistList Instance 14:2 Distributed: Thursday, June 29, 2000 Message Id: cdl-14-2-029 ***Received on Friday, 23 June, 2000
