Book Repair for Circulating Collections presented by The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) Sponsored by PALINET This two-day workshop presents in-house book repair as an economical alternative to replacement and commercial binding. July 20-21, 2000 PALINET/Philadelphia, PA (full) August 3-4, 2000 PALINET/Pittsburgh, PA Pittsburgh session is being cosponsored by the University of Pittsburgh School of Information Sciences. Each day of this two-day session will run from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM - coffee and tea will be available at 9:00 AM. Part I: Setting Up a Book Repair Unit (Day 1, 9:30 am-12:30 pm) This three-hour discussion outlines how to implement a book repair unit. Environment, tools, supplies, personnel and other resources needed for book repair are covered. Part II: Book Repair Techniques - (Day 1, 1:30-3:30 pm and Day 2, 9:30 am-3:30 pm) This hands-on laboratory teaches basic book repair for circulating general collections. It is not intended as a guide for conserving rare or valuable books. Participants will learn to: surface clean mend torn leaves mend torn spine pieces tip-in detached leaves tighten loose hinges sew pamphlets into sturdy boards Participants should bring a variety of damaged books from their collections to be used for establishing selection criteria and for repair. Books to bring for repair include: two books with torn pages two books with detached pages two paperbacks with detached covers two hardcover books with loose hinges two hardcover books with torn spine pieces two pamphlets to be sewn into hard covers Jim Hinz, Library Conservator at Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington, Delaware, will serve as instructor. He has taught bookbinding at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Parsons School of Design, and the University of the Arts. The cost for Part I and II is $195.00 per person; plus an $85.00 tool and supply fee which includes15 items to be kept by participants for use in local book repair projects. Lunch is included in the cost of the workshop. Due to the technical nature of this seminar, Part II is limited to one person per institution. However, participants are also invited to register an additional colleague from their institution for Part I: Setting Up a Book Repair Unit--the fee of $50 for this session includes lunch.
