Subject: Course on history of bookbinding
A History of European Bookbinding 1500-1800 Institute of Paper Conservation Course October 23-27, 2000 Tutor: Dr. Nicholas Pickwoad St Aldates Parish Centre, 40 Pembroke Street, Oxford OX1 1BP The course will follow European bookbinding from the end of the Middle Ages to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, using the bindings to illustrate the aims and intentions of the binding trade. Most of the time will be spent on the following: the identification of differences within plain commercial bindings; the possibilities of identifying the work of countries, cities and even workshops without reference to finishing tools; the significance of different materials used in bookbinding; the classification of bindings by structural type and how these developed. There will be slide lectures each morning, with three afternoons spent looking at examples of different binding types in Oxford college libraries. The course is aimed at all those handling books bound in this period, but it has particular relevance for those involved in the repair and conservation of such materials. Course fee: UKP360 IPC members, UKP410 non-members. The fee will include lunches, tea and coffee, but not accommodation. Confirmation of booking will only be made on receipt of payment. Cheques should be made payable to the Institute of Paper Conservation, and sent to Leigh Lodge.
