Broad Street Philadelphia, PA 19102-3083 9am - Registration and refreshments 9:30am-3:30pm - Workshop The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) announces a one day workshop. The program is partially funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Independence Foundation and The Pew Charitable Trusts. Topic: An informed understanding of the options to preserve brittle materials is critical to the success of a preservation program. All of our cultural and historic collections contain materials with brittle paper, as well as records and books that are on acidic paper that will eventually become brittle. This one day workshop provides an introduction to the issues institutions face when considering options for preservation of their brittle paper. The workshop will explore the problems of acidic and brittle paper and will discuss options for preserving the physical and intellectual content of collections. Several methods will be described, including mass deacidification, preservation photocopying, preservation microfilming and digital imaging. The advantages and disadvantages of each preservation application will be discussed. This workshop is intended for librarians, archivists, curators, collection managers, stewards of historic house museums and collection care professionals. Speaker: Steve Dalton, Director of Field Services, Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC). Mr. Dalton conducts preservation planning surveys; provides technical consultation on preservation issues for libraries, archives, museums and historical societies; conducts workshops and seminars on preservation topics; and manages the production and distribution of NEDCC's publications.
