Stereoscope cards

Can anyone recommend literature resources for the history,
production, or conservation of stereoscope cards (stereo
photographs, stereo views, stereographs, stereograms)? I am
particularly interested in the cards that consist of two layers: the
photographic image, and a paper layer behind the photograph that has
been cut and/or coloured to enhance the images. Any information
would be greatly appreciated.
