Cleaning painted ceiling

This concerns restoring a ceiling decoratively painted with
distemper based on animal glue. Damages are discoloured marks caused
by damp a few years ago. I would like to try to draw the
discolouring away with some cleaning agent. Have You any idea of
suitable materials ? (Above the ceiling is a system of joists,
brick-vaults and another system of joists.)
