Building Conservation Masterclasses West Dean College The Edward James Foundation February 20-23, 2001 Conservation and Repair of Masonry Ruins BC3D23 Course Leader: John Ashurst, former Principal Architect with English Heritage, former Professor of Building Conservation at Bournemouth University and joint author of the seminal book series Practical Building Conservation, Architectural Consultant in Historic Building Repair and Construction. Principal Tutor: Colin Burns, a Master Mason, former English Heritage Senior Training Officer at Fort Brockhurst Building Conservation Training Centre, with extensive practical experience of the conservation of historic masonry. Primarily designed for those concerned with the conservation of ruined structures, although the principles and skills are also applicable to roofed buildings. Assessment of the structural and surface condition of masonry walls, identification of traditional materials, fault diagnosis, removal and control of organic growth, consolidation and treatment of wall tops, specification of mortars and grouts and the preparation and placing of mortar, with practical exercises using the ruinette.
