Opening Date October 19, 2000 Closing Date March 2, 2001 Brief Description of Duties: The Chief plans and directs the activities of the Conservation Division of the Library of Congress. Establishes policies and procedures governing the preservation and physical conservation of rare books; manuscripts, maps atlases, prints and photographs, posters, drawings, other works of art on paper, and non-book media such as moving image and audio collections. Applies an in-depth knowledge of the full range of library preservation techniques to complex library decisions affecting the long-term preservation of those materials of greatest intrinsic value or historical significance. Develops and maintains comprehensive emergency preparedness and disaster recovery plans for all Library collection materials. Provides technical advice to other libraries based on in-depth knowledge of the nature of preservation problems. Provides for the professional development and advanced conservation training of Library of Congress conservation staff and conservation interns working at the Library. Minimum Qualifications: One year of specialized experience at the GS-14 level in the Federal Service or at a comparable level of difficulty outside the Federal Service which demonstrates a minimum level of proficiency in each of the following knowledge, skills and /or abilities (KSAs): 1. Skill in supervising others and managing a program--to plan and direct the activities of the Conservation Division of the Library of Congress and provide daily supervision for a large, highly skilled professional staff of conservators and conservation technicians. 2. Ability to communicate and interact with others--to advise the Director for Preservation on establishment of preservation policies, on short and long-range goals and plans for a systematic preservation program, and on priorities that will meet management needs and technical requirements; establish policies and procedures governing the preservation and physical conservation of library materials; and provide technical advice to the broad conservation community and contributes professionally to the fields of preservation and conservation. 3. Knowledge of preservation and conservation techniques and practices--to supervise the application of the full range of library preservation and conservation techniques and practices and contribute to complex library decisions affecting the long-term preservation and conservation of library materials.
