Subject: Conference on preservation of newspapers
Do We Want to Keep Our Newspapers? University of London Institute of English Studies School of Advanced Study In association with the Institute of United States Studies and the Institute of Historical Research The de-accessioning (following microfilming) of newspapers from research libraries in the United States, Great Britain and elsewhere has recently received wide publicity, following Nicholson Baker's 'Deadline' in The New Yorker (24 July, 2000) and articles in The Times, the TLS and other papers. In response to this publicity, the British Library has suspended the disposal of hard copies of foreign newspapers, pending an internal appraisal of the condition of early microfilm. This conference will review the issues involved and consider what are the best ways forward for preserving access to the printed record of the popular press.
