Preservation Scientist (DuPont Fellow) National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) The National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) and Northwestern State University seek a Ph.D. chemist or equivalent to fill a joint-research position for one year, with option for renewal for a second year. Experience in environmental science and/or preservation preferred. The incumbent will perform research at NCPTT focusing on deposition of sulfur dioxide to natural and treated stone. The incumbent will develop or continue a research project under the direction of the NCPTT Environmental and Materials Research Program Manager that investigates the potential of newly formulated water repellents for limestone, marble, and sandstone to limit deposition of air pollutants onto stone surfaces. The deposition velocity of sulfur dioxide to stone surfaces will be measured using the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training's (NCPTT) Environmental Exposure Facility. Products to be tested are under development by DuPont Corporation. Samples will be treated with various water repellents and exposed under ambient conditions similar to those found in an urban environment within the Eastern United States. The incumbent will supervise an undergraduate research intern during summer months. We offer the successful candidate a unique opportunity to apply science to the preservation of cultural resources.
