SOLINET, Inc., the Southeastern Library Network, is pleased to announce our Spring Preservation Workshops (Please excuse cross-posting): Fundamentals of Book Repair Wednesday-Thursday, May 16-17, 2001 at The Historic New Orleans Collection, New Orleans, LA from 8:30am-5pm. This two-day workshop is designed for staff members who perform book repair in libraries and is useful also to those who supervise repair units. The workshop teaches staff members simple, economical, and preservation quality repairs on materials in general, circulating and reference collections. The procedures covered are tightening hinges, endsheet replacement, spine replacement, paper mending, tip-ins and hinge-ins. The workshop will *not* cover techniques for the repair of materials that are special, rare, or archival. Library Binding for Preservation Wednesday, May 30, 2001 from 9am-4pm, SOLINET, Atlanta, GA This intensive one day workshop will give you the tools you need to make appropriate library binding decisions that balance your preservation goals and your financial realities. Preserving Collections in a Hostile Environment: Environmental Control and Monitoring Thursday, June 28, 2001 at Georgia Music Hall of Fame, Macon, GA from 9am - 4 pm. The most cost-effective strategy to preserve our documentary resources is by controlling temperature, relative humidity, and pollutants. This workshop will help library staff identify the source of problems, monitor the environment, and develop strategies for affecting change in their institution. It will include an extensive packet of resource materials, plus exhibits of state-of-the-art monitoring equipment. Instructor is Dr. Michael Trinkley, Director of Chicora Foundation. The increase in digital imaging projects for library and archival collections raises many issues related to selection, resource allocation and long-term access (preservation). Issues addressed in this one-day workshop include: What collection or resources are appropriate for digital conversion? How will the digital files be maintained? Who is responsible for ensuring future access to this digital information? To name a few. This workshop is designed to provide participants with the tools needed to make informed decisions about undertaking a scanning project. Instructor is Faye Phillips, Assistant Dean of Libraries for Special Collections, Louisiana State University. As libraries and other information institutions collect and provide access to increasing amounts of digital data, they look to digital technologies to improve access to existing collections in a variety of formats (text, audio, video, photographs, objects, etc.). Long-term program management raises the issue of how to coherently create, integrate, and sustain new digital resources and programs, such as imaging projects, within existing resources and programs. This two-day workshop is meant to help provide the knowledge and expertise necessary to begin developing local digital resources in a responsible, sustainable, and systematic manner, integrated with other library procedures and workflow. Instructor Erich Kesse is Director of the Digital Library Center, University of Florida. Digital Imaging of Photographic Collections Thursday-Friday, June 7-8, 2000 at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC from 9am - 4pm. This two-day workshop provides the information necessary to select, convert, and provide access to an image database. It focuses on the technical aspects and on the issues associated with using digital imaging technology to convert photographic materials and make them accessible on the Internet. Included are hands-on demonstrations and exercises covering scanning techniques, lighting, applying metadata standards, and database development. Instructor is Grace Agnew, Assistant Director for Systems and Technical Services at the Georgia Tech Library and Laurel Crafts, Project Coordinator at the Georgia Tech Library who manages the digital imaging projects for the library.
