Media Preservation Coordinator Preservation Department Stanford University Libraries Description: Plans, implements, and manages, in consort with Head, Media Preservation, projects to preserve, by reformatting or other means, non-print materials including but not limited to: sound recordings, videotape, motion picture film, and computer media. This includes estimating and tracking costs. Success of projects is determined by this incumbent's effectiveness as a project manager. Because s/he operates with minimal oversight, errors in judgment have a major negative impact on clients' programs, could require a significant expenditure of resources to correct, and could cause a failure to meet grant responsibilities. Plans, implements, and manages, in consort with Head, Media Preservation, digital imaging projects to preserve library and archive materials. Performs digital imaging and image processing of considerable technical complexity. This involves using independent judgment and sophisticated image manipulation techniques to reproduce precisely the visual qualities of unique and diverse library and archival materials and to produce digital images meeting any appropriate archival imaging specifications. Performs complex problem solving relating to unit's functions. Creates interoperable solutions in a continuously evolving technical environment. Oversees all aspects of reformatting of non-print materials, including consultation with curators and vendors. Works, negotiates, and troubleshoots with vendors: makes contact, corresponds, negotiates, performs quality control, and gives feedback directly to vendors. Maintains current awareness of leading edge technical developments in a broad range of arenas that impact program planning and purchasing specifications, including software, emerging technical trends, operating systems, and preservation developments. Supervises students and hourly employees and oversees foreign-language specialists from other units working on reformatting projects. Recommends hardware and software purchases. Provides technical input in support of project planning and grant writing both within the Preservation Department and to other units. Qualifications: Demonstrated excellent technical skills in area of digital imaging, including but not limited to operation of digital cameras and scanners, and photography. Demonstrated mastery of Adobe Photoshop; proficiency with other Adobe imaging products and other imaging systems. Knowledge of at least one programming language desirable. Experience with database analysis and design desirable. Sufficient networking knowledge to implement systems integration in an heterogeneous hardware/software environment, including local and remote image, audio, and video capture devices; storage devices; and other hardware. Experience administering NT and Unix systems desirable. Ability to absorb technical and engineering literature concerning audio and video formats, image compression, etc. Knowledge of standards pertaining to preservation of electronic materials. Substantial understanding of preservation issues involved in reformatting print and non-print materials. Willingness and ability to learn new programming languages, database systems, sophisticated computer applications, etc. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing as well as possess strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team. Demonstrated ability working with all levels of staff, vendors, and consultants. Broad understanding of preservation theory and practice and its application in a research library desirable. Experience in a research library desirable.
