Cleaning suede

A bookbinder acquaintance without access to the
list has posed the following question: What might be used to cleanse
suede?

A rare suede bound volume which has suffered years of neglect is in
need of conservation, conventional means have failed to remove
surface grime from the suede covering.

Is it possible to apply a localised aqueous treatment to the suede
which would remove or reduce the surface grime without damaging the
surface of the suede.
