Exhibit Preparator Kelsey Museum of Archaeology The Kelsey Museum of Archaeology at the University of Michigan invites applications for the position of Exhibit Preparator. The Exhibit Preparator will be a member of the museum's collection management team and working closely with the Registrar, Conservator and Curator of Academic Outreach will assist in all activities concerned with ensuring the proper care and preservation of the collections. The Kelsey Museum houses over 100,000 ancient artifacts including coins, pottery, glass, seals, inscriptions and a large collection of textiles. Much of the collection derives from the museum's excavations at the Greco-Roman sites of Karanis and Terenouthis in Egypt; all pertain to the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. The Museum is a unit in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts and plays a prominent role in the teaching programs of the College. It mounts an active exhibit program including permanent displays, at least one annual installation featuring special aspects of its own collections, occasional loan shows, undergraduate shows and collaborative efforts with the University's Museum of Art. The successful candidate for this full-time position will work with Museum curators and staff to design, install, maintain and dismantle all Museum exhibits. Duties include space preparation, design and fabrication of cases, bases, mounts and other exhibition furniture, lighting, signage, and labeling. Working with the conservator the Exhibit Preparator will see that all objects are safely mounted and displayed. She/he will be responsible for purchasing needed materials and support equipment and ensuring their efficient use, maintenance and storage. The Exhibit Preparator is expected to oversee carpenters contracted to build larger installations and movers who crate artifacts to be loaned. Minimum qualifications for the position include a Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, design skills, manual skills relevant to object installation, exhibition preparation and maintenance, knowledge of current museum practices and standards, and basic computer skills.
