The Conservation Center of the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University is pleased to announce a Summer Workshop: One Week to Better Photography Dwight Primiano August 27 - 31, 2001 Fee: $100/ day or $400/week Application Deadline: July 26, 2001 Photodocumentation plays a major role in conservation and the study of fine arts but many professionals who use photography are self taught. This intense hands-on workshop will provide all the skills, from simple to complex, necessary for consistent quality photographs under any condition. For the beginner the first day will introduce participants to the basics of 35mm SLR camera selection and operation. Those familiar with camera operation can join the workshop for individual days or a four-day course on photographic methods for two and three dimensional objects and architecture with 35mm and 4 X 5. Slide and black and white photographs produced in the workshop will be critiqued to help identify means to produce accurate photodocumentation with consistent exposures. The results of attending this workshop will be better images and reduced film and processing costs. Day 1: Camera basics, metering, testing and calibration of color and b&w film, 35mm and 4x5 copy stand. Digital post-production of film images. Day 2: Studio photography of 2D objects with various lighting, large format equipment selection, use of Polaroid film, metering, color calibration and film selection. Day 3: Studio photography of 3D objects, mechanics of 4x5 camera, lenses, metering, film selection, lighting, and digital post-production. Day 4: Architecture and monument photography in 35 mm format, available light, metering, specialized equipment--35 mm perspective control lenses, zoom and telephoto lenses and tripods. Day 5: B&W film processing and printings, contract controls and UV and IR photography. Application: Early application is recommended to insure a place, as enrollment is limited. Late applications will be accepted if space allows. Meals, housing, and minor travel costs associated with field trips are not included in tuition fees. Deposits will be refunded in full if the course is canceled. Checks should be payable to New York University. Financial Aid: Partial financial assistance is available for qualified applicants who would otherwise be unable to take the course.
