Subject: Museum Victoria
The Victorian Division of the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Material AICCM Vic) would like to post some background information regarding the recently advertised Manager, Conservation position at Museum Victoria, Australia (Conservation DistList Instance: 15:1 Wednesday, June 6, 2001 ) Prospective applicants should be aware that this vacancy arises as a result of a recent organisational restructure. The restructure abolished the previous Head of Conservation position at Level 5, replacing it with the downgraded Level 4 Manager position. Strategic conservation policy development and other key decisions will now be the accountability of a Level 5 non-conservation specialist. AICCM (Vic) believes the most senior conservator in a large State institution should have accountability for conservation policy and strategy, as well as procedures. AICCM (Vic) also believes the position should be at the highest band level to: * attract candidates with appropriate expertise and ability * carry sufficient authority within the organisation so as to play a strategic leadership role * provide a career structure that spans all levels within the public sector, that reflects equity across all industry sectors Please note that these comments are not a reflection on the current Museum Victoria Conservation staff or the previous incumbent, all of whom have the support and respect of the AICCM. Equally, it is not our intention to discourage applicants from applying for the position, but to inform them of the circumstances of the situation.
