The only effective preventive measure against frost damage to porous
stones is thorough and effective grouting of voids and fissures. In
the case of lime stone a grout based on sieved lime putty would be
best, although there are some excellent preparatory grouts based on
hydraulic lime on the market (intended primarily for use in the
restoration of plaster and mosaic). You may also consider a form of
lime 'shelter coat' such as is often applied to limestone
architectural monuments in the U.K. with varying degrees of skill.
