Cemetery Preservation National Preservation Institute Seminars in Historic Preservation and Cultural Resource Management in cooperation with the National Cemetery Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs Alexandria, VA October 4, 2001 Learn how to begin a cemetery preservation or restoration project and how to help ensure that sound choices are made to avoid harming what you seek to protect. Discussions focus on current issues in cemetery preservation, such as recording and documenting cemeteries and graveyards, undertaking preservation efforts, and exploring conservation techniques and issues. Faculty: Mike Trinkley and Debi Hacker from the Chicora Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit heritage preservation organization experienced in working with museums, archives, and historic organizations; specialists in research, public education, conservation, and preservation. This seminar is useful for curators and managers of historic cemeteries; preservation consultants. Agenda: * Understand the difference between "restoration" and "conservation" or "preservation" * What are the essential issues in cemetery preservation? * Recognize the different types of American cemeteries and how their preservation varies * What are the critical components in a "typical" cemetery preservation plan * Why accurate, complete transcription is so critical as a first step * Learn to identify the major types of monuments found in most cemeteries * Identify the most common stone materials and their critical differences * Critical landscape issues that are often overlooked * Developing appropriate maintenance plans * Just what is deterioration and how can it affect cemetery markers? * Understanding cleaning * Appropriate and inappropriate repairs * Why is concrete the single greatest threat to cemetery markers? * What are the options for treating ironwork? * The role of volunteers in cemetery preservation * Understanding and developing a conservation ethic * How to prepare scopes of work for cemetery projects The National Preservation Institute is a nonprofit organization that provides professional training for the management, development, and preservation of historic, cultural, and environmental resources.
