Head, Preservation Department Collection Management Division Professional Librarian Vacancy Northwestern University Library Responsibilities: The Head of the Preservation Department, who reports to the Assistant University Librarian for Collection Management, has chief responsibility for developing and implementing a comprehensive program of preservation for the Library's general and special collections in all formats. Provides leadership for the Preservation Department, which consists of 9.5 total staff in four units: Materials Processing (commercial bindery preparation, mass deacidification preparation, microfilming projects and other reformatting), Conservation, Preservation Digitization Technology, and the Brittle Books Program. Is responsible for fiscal management of all departmental operations. Manages interdepartmental and interdivisional coordination of preservation activities, the education program for staff and library users, oversees special programs and projects. Pursues grant opportunities and prepares grant proposals for special programs for the full range of preservation. Evaluates collections for preservation and reformatting; monitors physical condition of stacks and collections. As the leader of library-wide preservation efforts for all divisions of the Library, works in close cooperation with bibliographers and selectors in setting preservation priorities, as well as staff in Technical Services in providing bibliographic access. Is in contact with the facilities manager in maintaining collection storage areas and disaster recovery. Together with the Library's Digital Media Services, Library's Information Technology Division, and University Academic Technologies, promotes the Library's mission to digitize parts of the collection. Explores applications of digital technology for preservation of all formats, including digital files. Writes and monitors contracts for binding and other services. Maintains disaster plan and oversees disaster team. In the capacity of department head, serves on the Library's Management Council, an advisory body to the University Librarian. Represents the Library to external organizations, such as the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), on matters concerning cooperative programs for preservation and contractual services. Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or other appropriate advanced degree, and at least five years of experience in a comprehensive preservation program at a research library. Background in reformatting, staff and user education, or digitization highly desirable. Skills in budgetary matters and resource allocation desirable. Administrative experience and proven record in successfully applying for and implementing grand funded projects. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to build consensus to initiate programs, coordinate programs, or participate as a member of project teams. Salary: $45,000 minimum.
