Subject: Lecture on digital imaging
A Broad Spectrum: Digital Imaging at the National Gallery, London Dr. David Saunders Scientific Department National Gallery, London National Gallery of Art Andrew W. Mellon Visiting Lecture Series National Gallery of Art East Building Large Auditorium 6th and Constitution Avenue NW Washington DC 20565 Wednesday, September 19, 2001 2 pm Abstract: Using imaging systems sensitive to the visible and infrared regions of the spectrum and through digitisation of x-radiographs, the National Gallery in London is establishing a digital image dossier for every painting in the collection and recording each stage of conservation treatments. These image dossiers form the basis of a collection information system (the VERMEER system) developed at the National Gallery to serve the needs of curators, conservators, scientists, and those involved in the reproduction of images in the Gallery's information systems and publications. This presentation will describe the imaging systems used at the National Gallery to acquire spectral images for technical analysis, three-band colour images for documentation and reproduction, infrared reflectograms and digital x-radiograph mosaics. The integration of these imaging technologies and methodologies into the Gallery's activities will be described. A series of case studies will illustrate the use of different types of images in the examination, documentation and reproduction of paintings. *** Conservation DistList Instance 15:23 Distributed: Tuesday, September 11, 2001 Message Id: cdl-15-23-009 ***Received on Thursday, 6 September, 2001
