Assistant Conservator Archives and Special Collections Durham University University Library Non-fixed term, 18.5 hours per week, UKP17,551 - UKP19,751 per annum, rising on 1 March 2002 to UKP17,726 - UKP19,949, pro rata. The Conservation Unit handles a wide range of materials, including mediaeval and modern paper and parchment documents, manuscript and printed volumes, maps, plans, architectural drawings,seals, photographs and special media. It also has microfilming and photographic facilities and responsibilities. It has a permanent establishment of one full-time and one part-time conservator,and additional fixed-term staffing from project funding. The Assistant Conservator will share in the wide variety of work undertaken in the library's Conservation Unit which includes challenging paper and parchment repair,book conservation, and repair of seals. The unit is also regularly involved in preventive rehousing,environmental monitoring and assistance with exhibition mounting. The Assistant Conservator will work as part of a small team under the direction of the Senior Conservator.Applicants should be qualified conservators,with at least five years experience,preferably including both paper conservation and binding,and will be self motivated and enthusiastic,with the flexibility to adapt skills to a variety of work.
