Subject: Wheels for carts
We are inquiring about recommendations for wheels to be used on A-frame carts for storing heavy, fragile panels for a substantial length of time. The panels are lacquer over a carved plaster substrate within a metal frame. We are considering using appropriately padded McMaster-Carr A-frame 2000 carts (item Number 2570T22) with locking casters. This way the panels can be deinstalled directly onto the storage equipment and can be moved as necessary on the equipment, thus eliminating handling. We anticipate that the panels on the carts will weigh up to 500 lbs. The panels will be transported between the gallery where they are currently hung, a temporary storage area in the museum and the conservation lab. The floors in these areas and the corridors range from wood to bumpy granite to linoleum to concrete. We need wheels that will allow for easy transport over the floors, minimize vibration during transit, and that will not deform during periods that the panels remain static in storage. Any recommendations will be appreciated. Please let us know if the wheels you recommend are associated with special types of casters.
