Assistant Conservator Fixed term to 31 July 2004 University Library Archives and Special Collections University of Durham UKP15,749-UKP17,206 or UKP17,726-UKP19,949 per annum, according to experience. The Conservation Unit handles a wide range of materials,including mediaeval and modern paper and parchment documents,manuscript and printed volumes,maps,plans,architectural drawings,seals,and special media.It also has microfilming and photographic facilities and responsibilities.It has a permanent establishment of one full time and one part time conservator,and additional fixed term staffing from project funding. In collaboration with NEMLAC ( North East Museums Libraries and Archives Council ),the Unit will also offer conservation advice to collections in the the region. The Assistant Conservator will share in the wide variety of work undertaken in the unit, which also involves preventive rehousing,environmental monitoring and assistance with exhibition mounting. The postholder may be involved in externally funded project work where deadlines have to be met and will participate in the broader regional activities as appropriate. The Assistant Conservator will work as part of a small team under the direction of the Senior Conservator.Applicants should be self motivated and enthusiastic,with the flexibility to adapt skills to a wide variety of work.Staff are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities for further training,and the post holder will be expected to keep abreast of new techniques and developments.
