The Care and Preservation of Art and Artifacts in Public Places
CAC Pre-Conference Workshop - 2002
Kingston, Ontario, Canada
May 23-24, 2002

The focus of 28th Annual CAC Pre-Workshop Conference is "the Care
and Preservation of Art and Artifacts in Public Places". The aim of
the workshop is to bring together professionals and specialists from
the conservation community and from related fields to discuss the
various challenges that caring for publicly displayed artworks and
monuments presents.

Participants will have the opportunity to: hear from experts; gather
information; participate in hands on activities; observe examples of
public art, conservation treatments, and methods of preventive
conservation; and to make new contacts within the heritage
community.

The first day of the workshop will be delivered as a series of
presentations, held at the Donald Gordon Centre at Queen's
University, Kingston, ON. The second day of the workshop will be
delivered in the Memorial Hall of Kingston City Hall. During the
morning sessions practical applications will balance the information
from the previous day and a moderated discussion on "Tips and Tales"
will serve as a summary for the sessions. An afternoon bus tour to
local sites will illustrate some of the conservation challenges
presented by art and artifacts in public places. The two day
pre-conference workshop will be followed by the 28th Annual CAC
Conference on May 25-26, 2002, Kingston, ON.

The Pre-Conference Workshop: "the Care and Preservation of Art and
Artifacts in Public Places" will address a number of themes
including:

    *   Policy Development and Management
    * Public Art and the Environment
    *   Access and Vandalism
    *   Context and Sensitivity
    *   Working Together
