Subject: Institute on library binding
The Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of the American Library Association, invites you to participate in the "New Directions in Library Binding" Institute, Wednesday-Friday, March 13-15, 2002 in Atlanta, Georgia. Librarians recognize that the careful consideration of the binding and re-binding of books and serials are key elements in preserving and maintaining access to collections. As the profession faces the challenges posed by increasing costs of library materials, the deterioration caused by acidic paper, the damaging effects of photocopying, and the declining quality of many publishers' bindings, it is clear that library binding must be a viable option for maintaining library collections in usable form. The Standard for Library Binding (ANSI/NISO/LBI Z39.78-2000) describes the technical and materials specifications for binding and re-binding. Library staff must be knowledgeable in order to apply them correctly. Topics to be covered include: * Library binding in the digital age * The making of the modern book * Leaf attachment * Binding materials: traditional and new * Collections conservation and commercial library binding * Managing a quality-control program * Automated binding records management * Contracts and agreements for library binding Faculty includes: Brian Baird, Preservation Librarian, University of Kansas; Wes Boomgaarden, Preservation Officer, Ohio State University; Don Dunham, Executive Director, Library Binding Institute; Eric Fairfield, Vice President of Marketing and Sales, ICIBinding Corporation; Fritz James, President, Library Binding Services; Paul Parisi, President, Acme Bookbinding; Patricia Palmer Selinger, Head, Preservation Services, Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries; and Barbara A. Voyer, Assistant Vice President/Technical Sales Manager, ICIBinding Corporation. The institute is designed to train library staff in the administrative and operational functions of a library binding program. Supervisors and staff in serials, technical services, binding, and preservation units will find the curriculum most useful. The two-day institute will be held on Wednesday, March 13 and Thursday, March 14 from 8 am - 5 pm, at the Wyndham Atlanta hotel in Atlanta, Georgia. An optional tour of the National Library Bindery in Roswell will be held on Friday, March 15 from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. ALCTS has reserved a block of rooms at the Wyndham Atlanta hotel until February 18 at a room rate of $169 single and $179 double (plus tax). To reserve a room, call the hotel direct at 404-688-8600. The registration fees are $375 for ALCTS and/or SOLINET members; $425 for ALA members; $425 for non-members; and $190 for students.
