Assistant Conservator, Archaeological Metals Project
The Field Museum

The Field Museum <URL:http://www.fieldmuseum.org> is offering a
2-year term position for a conservator to participate in an
archaeological metals project. Surveys indicate that about one
quarter of the Anthropology Department's collections of
archaeological metals are either actively corroding or are at high
risk of doing so in the current storage facilities. The
Mesopotamian, Roman and Etruscan, and European Iron Age material
appear to be among the most vulnerable collections. The goal of the
project is to stabilize these objects through treatment or provision
of isolated special storage environments.

The conservator will:

    1. Conduct survey of archaeological metals in the Anthropology
Department to determine stability in current and proposed
        storage facilities.

    2. Work with department conservators and collection managers to
develop and establish special environment storage facilities
        required for unstable metals.

    3. Treat objects that are unstable. Treat objects that are
likely to be required for loan, display, photography or
        research.

    4. Perform research as required to improve methods, materials,
and procedures for conservation and storage of unstable
archaeological metals; possibly disseminate results in
        publications and oral presentations.

    5. Attend professional meetings or workshops as required to
keep current in the field of conservation and enhance
professional knowledge and skills related to the project.
6.Assist in the operation and activities of the conservation
        laboratories related to the project.

Candidates must have a graduate degree in Conservation or equivalent
training. A specialization in objects conservation and experience
with archaeological metals is required. Demonstrated written and
verbal communication skills, and demonstrated conservation skills
and knowledge are required.

A salary of $31,000 per annum and a competitive benefits package is
offered.
