The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is committed to making its
renowned collection more accessible. Digitizing the collection is
the foundation for Web access, innovative educational programs,
collections management, and attracting new audiences to the museum.
In support of this commitment we have created the new position of
Director of Collections Digitization. This individual will work with
curators, technology staff, registrar, conservators, others within
the museum, and outside consultants and vendors to plan, coordinate,
and launch a collection digitization program.

Responsibilities include:

    *   Developing and writing a comprehensive plan incorporating
        digital standards to match museum's various digitization
        needs.

    *   Planning and coordinating use of digital images, ensuring
        that museum standards are applied.

    *   Selecting image database and storage/retrieval procedures.

    *   Analyzing equipment needs, consulting with other museums
        that have successful digitization programs.

    *   Setting up a photo studio/workstation, hiring and
        supervising a photographer/technician to begin in-house
        digitization of an estimated 600 works.

    *   Developing outside sources such as scanning studios and
        freelance digital photographers for more complex digital
        work.

    *   Collaborating with the development staff to develop funding
        sources for continuing this project to full implementation.

Requirements of this position include the ability to plan,
prioritize, and coordinate differing digitization needs of museum
departments, and collaborating with department heads. Working
knowledge of digital imaging technologies and trends, software and
equipment; and excellent communication and organizational skills are
also necessary as is a background in digitization technology and art
history; museum experience, preferably in a computerized collections
management environment. A Master's degree is preferred.  Funded
through a generous 2-year grant, this contract position is renewable
and includes our full complement of employee benefits.
