Conservation Seminar: Pest Management and Prevention in Museums, Historical Houses and Archives Indiana Historical Society May 13 and 14, 2002 The Indiana Historical Society will host a two-day conservation seminar titled "Pest Management and Prevention in Museums, Historical Houses, and Archives," on May 13 and 14, 2002 at its headquarters, 450 West Ohio Street, Indianapolis, Indiana. The seminar will be presented in cooperation with the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art, and Insects Limited Inc. of Westfield, Indiana. Speakers and workshop facilitators will include a variety of experts: David Pinniger from London, England, who is a pest management strategy advisor for English Heritage and many of the UK museums such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Science Museum, and author of Pest Management in Museums, Archives and Historic Houses; Ilionore Kissel, a private consultant/trainer for archive preservation; Ramona Duncan-Huse, Director of Conservation at the Indiana Historical Society; Christy O'Grady, Chief Conservator of The Children's Museum of Indianapolis; and David Mueller (President), Alain VanRyckeghem (Technical Director) and Pat Kelley (General Manager) of Insects Limited Inc., will share their knowledge and experience in pest monitoring and management within museum and archive environments. Topics will include an overview of integrated pest management and IPM in practice using case studies; pest management and prevention in archives; insect and pest identification ("The Dirty Dozen") and health hazards associated with them; practical use of pheromones and fumigants; the use of temperature to eradicate pest infestations; and a case study in co-operation between museums and pest managers. Topics will be presented in a lecture and workshop format. Lectures will be presented each morning and workshop tours of the Eiteljorg Museum, Indiana Historical Society, and The Children's Museum will take place each afternoon. There will also be a "Show and Tell" of tools, equipment, resources and examples of pests, traps, monitoring and inspection tools, books, safety equipment, and methods of prevention and exclusion of pests. Registration fee for the two-day session is $275 per person when registering before April 13. Registration includes lunch for both days, transportation to The Children's Museum, and an evening reception. Registration discounts are available for organizations sending more than one participant.
