Subject: Heating museum materials
In response to an inquiry about heating museum object materials for pest mitigation, Howard Wellman mentioned a seminar that he attended on a proprietary process. He is referring to the Thermo-Lignum Method. Roy Thomson, Director of the Leather Conservation Centre, Northampton, England, has written an article on that subject and process in the Leather Conservation News. It is entitled "The Effect of the Thermo-Lignum Pest Eradication Treatment on Leather and Other Skin Products", LCN Volume 11, Numbers 1 and 2, Summer and Fall, 1995, ISSN 0898-0128. Mr. Thomson originally presented his research data on this topic at the Interim Meeting of the ICOM Working Group: Conservation Leathercraft and Related Objects, Amsterdam, April, 1995 and in the "Proceedings" publication of that meeting. The method was originally developed by Herr Werner von Rotberg in Heidelberg, Germany in 1992. Paul S.
