Internship at Field Museum

From: Ruth Norton <rnorton>
Date: Wednesday, March 20, 2002
Post-Graduate Internship in Objects Conservation
Anthropology Department
The Field Museum

The Field Museum is offering a one-year post-graduate internship in
objects conservation, supported by the Getty Trust Grant Program.
The aim of the internship is to enable advanced experience in the
conservation of ethnographic and archaeological materials. This
includes object evaluation and treatment, collection and management
based projects, and research.

The anthropology and archaeology collections comprise a million
artifacts from a wide range of cultural areas and time periods. Many
result from museum sponsored field research and include extensive
archival documentation. The collections are widely used for
research, loan and exhibition. The intern will be able to work on a
wide variety of artifacts, with the opportunity for intensive
examination of artifact materials, condition and cultural context.
The opportunities to gain experience in collection survey,
stabilization, maintenance and other duties addressing the
collection as a whole are inherent in several of the major
collections projects underway. As a member of the conservation
staff, the intern will also be included in pest and environmental
management programs, and other routine responsibilities of the
laboratory. A research project will be supported by in house
resources and the travel and study allowance. The preparation of a
publishable paper from the research project is seen as an important
component of the internship. Selection of conservation treatments
and projects is based on the intern's experience and interests
coupled with museum priorities.

The Field Museum provides an excellent environment in which to gain
experience in the care and treatment of anthropological and
archaeological collections. The resources of all four academic
departments (anthropology, zoology, botany and geology) are
available for study and consultation, the library holdings are
extensive and standard academic library services are available. The
museum has relations with several Chicago universities that allow
access to their libraries and staff. Conservation also works with
other museum departments (exhibits, education, facilities and
operations) in developing and maintaining museum activities and
physical environment. The museum's web site offers some idea of the
range of projects and resources of the museum
(<URL:http://www.fieldmuseum.org>).

The internship will begin Fall 2002. The position includes a $24,000
salary, a $2000 travel and study allowance, full fringe benefits,
and the possibility of moving/meeting travel expenses. Candidates
must have a degree in conservation, with a specialization in objects
conservation. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
are required.
