Seminar and workshop on the care and conservation of bark paintings June 2002 The Conservation of Cultural Materials Program at the University of Canberra is organizing a seminar and a workshop on the Care and Conservation of Australian Aboriginal Bark Paintings in June 2002. The aim of this training is to increase awareness of the special needs of Australian Aboriginal bark paintings in museums/galleries and private collections. Therefore, we invite all people interested in the care and preservation of bark paintings to participate in the seminar and/or the workshop. Seminar (1 day) June 11, 2002: General session designed for professionals and students including curatorial, registration, small museum staff, Aboriginal Keeping Places personnel, private art gallery staff or any other staff dealing with the care of bark painting collections. Content: This day-long session will cover presentation of materials and techniques of bark paintings production, discussion of factors in their deterioration, and preventive conservation issues related to their handling, storage, and display and transport systems. This knowledge will allow the participants to develop appropriate understanding and provide them with a range practical options for the proper care of bark paintings in small and large collections. Handout materials will be provided for future reference. Pre-requisites: No specialized knowledge is required, but general interest in the issues related to bark paintings and their care will be of assistance. Conservation workshop (2 days): 12-13 June 2002 Session designed for conservation students and conservators dealing with care and treatments of bark paintings. Content: Discussions will include further details of materials and techniques of bark paintings manufacture related specifically to conservation problems and treatments. Condition reporting and related terminology and methodology discussions will be with based on a sample painting prepared by each participant using traditional materials collected recently at Oenpelli. These paintings will be examined on and used for a practical conservation session. Conservation techniques and materials used will include past and present options including the use of an ultrasonic mister. The workshop will conclude with a general discussion of treatments methods and encountered problems. Pre-requisites: Some general conservation knowledge and skills are highly recommended.
