Subject: Call for papers--Wood and furniture conservation
First Call for Papers Sixth International Symposium on Wood and Furniture Conservation The Meeting of East and West in Furniture Trade Stichting Ebenist To be held at The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam December 13, 2002 This year 400 years VOC (the Dutch East-India Company) are celebrated. Following the discovery of new continents exotic materials became available, such as shellac, Eastern lacquer, tropical hardwoods, ivory, mother of pearl, whalebone and tortoiseshell. Mutual inspiration and fascination led to new forms and a new ornamental vocabulary. Exotic objects were collected as well as imitated and in the New World furniture was produced to fit the Western taste. Dealing with these in many ways foreign products is often a challenging task for furniture and objects conservators. A broad knowledge is necessary about materials, ornaments and the history of cultural exchanges. The change of setting of an object might have completely changed its function. Possible subjects for papers: Specific problems and ethical considerations relating to colonial furniture and the use of exotic materials in western furniture; Furniture and timber trade; Comparison of conservation practice in various countries.
