Workshop on Environmental Monitoring
May 17, 2002

Workshop with hands-on activities and small group discussions, for
conservators, curators, registrars, facility managers, and site
managers.

Cost: $25 per person
Approximately 6 hours

Museums are told that they need to conduct environmental monitoring
for the care and preservation of their collections. At present,
this is done in a variety of ways depending upon the institution,
the budget, and the training and availability of staff. Often the
data collected sits in stacks of hygrothermograph records on a shelf
collecting dust waiting for someone to interpret it. Occasionally,
the data collected is not reliable due to human error or improper
operation and maintenance of the equipment. Newer technologies such
as dataloggers can provide too much information, making
interpretation extremely difficult and frustrating.

The workshop will emphasize monitoring exterior and interior
climate, primarily temperature, relative humidity and light and will
address:

    Reasons to monitor
    How to establish monitoring programs
    Types of equipment available
Common errors in equipment operation and maintenance
    How to interpret data

The program will include case histories of monitoring projects,
small group work and hands-on activities in the use of a variety of
equipment, exercises in interpreting data, and discussions to
address issues brought to the workshop by attendees.

This workshop is geared toward anyone who has responsibility for the
care and preservation of collections. Especially important for
museums that are contemplating or in process of making environmental
improvements, this session should be beneficial for all types of
museums and historic sites.

An assortment of equipment will be utilized for "hands-on"
exercises. Attendees also will be encouraged to bring any equipment
that they may be currently using at their institutions.

The workshop objective will be to demystify monitoring equipment and
the monitoring process and to help staff conduct effective
environmental monitoring programs at their institutions in order to
better care for their collections.
