Subject: Workshop on use of vacuum in paper conservation
Workshop to Explore the Use of Vacuum in Paper Conservation London Metropolitan Archives 40 Northampton Road, London EC1R 0HB Course Tutor: Alan Buchanan June 25-27, 2002 Each participant receives a set of pre-prints, which describes the pumps that are usually used to create vacuum, how they do this and what their constraints are. The pre-prints also discuss the movement of liquids in paper and there is a COSHH assessment form together with an invitation to carry out an assessment if anyone wishes. There are generally eight participants; one from the host studio and seven others. The tutor is keen that everyone spends as much time on the machines as possible and, to this end, he runs through the performance of each vacuum table and gives instruction on how to turn them on and off. Alan brings a portfolio of valueless works of art on paper with problems susceptible to treatment by vacuum. There are usually four tables available and, within say an hour, participants are paired off and all are working on the machines. The first day covers high and low vacuum, what they are used for, various ways of getting water into and through paper and blanking off for high vacuum. The second day covers washing, bleaching, washing discrete areas of objects and pulp repairs. On the third day the participants are introduced to methods of removing solvent adhesives from paper and lining objects with delicate images on vacuum. All participants are invited to bring objects with problems that are treatable with vacuum but are reminded that the object's safekeeping is their responsibility. There are a variety of materials to use as treatment carriers and to use for blanking off unused areas of the tables. It is an opportunity for participants to experiment. Course fee: IPC members UKP150, non-members UKP200. Maximum 8 delegates. Fee does not include lunch.
