Subject: Archives Conservation Discussion Group
The Archives Conservation Discussion Group (a special interest group within the Book and Paper Group) will meet at the AIC Annual Meeting in Miami on June 10th, Monday afternoon from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. This year's topic is humidification and flattening for archival collections and will focus on the use of humidification chambers and other humidification systems, along with approaches to drying and flattening. More than a how-to session, this meeting will seek to exchange information of particular relevance for humidifying archival collections. Examples of this might include: surface cleaning prior to humidification, fasteners (such as staples, grommets, etc.), maintaining original order, seals and other forms of attachments, methods of testing media, mold damaged materials, varnished and lined maps, various paper types, and levels of appropriate documentation. We are soliciting your participation and welcome anyone who has a method of humidification or flattening that has been effective with archival collections, and also those who have experience and information to share on the issues listed above. A slide and data projector will be available for those who care to share images. Please contact Kathy Ludwig 301-837-1876 kathy.ludwig [at] nara__gov or Kristen St.John 732-932-7006 kstjohn [at] rci__rutgers__edu with your contribution so that we can best organize the 90 minute discussion. We'd like to limit contributions to approximately 5 minutes, so that as much information as possible can be shared and allow time for dialog.
